After an interesting breakfast in the large breakfast hall of our hotel, full of German tourists, we loaded our motorcycles and headed north.
Beautiful countryside, lots of tight curves, and lots of all types of agriculture. We saw orange trees, olive trees, and vineyards as we rode alongside the Guadiana river which serves as the border between Portugal and Spain.
We stoped at Alcoutim for coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice. A beautiful town on the banks of the Guadiana river. Lots of large sailboats in the river and the Castle of San Marcos up on the hill on the other side of the river, in Spain.
Overall, Portugal feels old, calm, settled, with a unique peace to it. Everything seems to flow calmly, time flows slower and days seem longer. As a result, you tend to be more present and take more in. When no bias or filter is applied to everything coming at you, a new sense of wonder arises. Everything is extremely interesting again.
We stopped at the Castelo de Monsaraz, a beautiful walled castle, fortress, and town at the top of a mountain. Great 360 views of the valleys below.
We finally made it to Marvao, our destination for the night. Marvao makes Monsaraz look like its little brother. This place is spectacular. At the top of a very high mountain with big castle on top, a great town inside the walls, and a great Pousada in it.
We went for a visit to the castle, walked around, and finished the day with a great dinner at the Pousada overlooking the valleys below. Cidalia, our host, made us feel welcome and happy. A great ending for a great day.
