The Beautiful Village and The Highest Point

We had breakfast at the top of Marvao at our hotel overlooking the valley and Spain below.  Marvao is a maze of narrow and steep cobblestone streets.  Getting our motorcycles loaded and ready to go was a bit tricky.

Today was a magnificent day of spirited riding through endless turns, switchbacks, uphills, downhills, little villages, rivers, bridges, and great views from everywhere.  So many turns that shifting body positions from one side of the motorcycle to the other and hanging off the bike for long periods of time amounted to a great workout.  Sore muscles and all. Wow!

The 2022 R1250GS that I am riding is absolutely incredible.  It is noticeably more powerful and planted than any other GS I have ridden before. Pure joy. Technology at its best.

Today was a challenging ride day that required full-concentration and a meditation-like quiet mind.  This intense focus and the added adrenaline brought all that was around us into a heightened sense of being alive. Wow!

We eventually made our way to Piodao, a very hard-to-get-to village perched on the hills and hidden in a ravine between several mountains. Allegedly one of the most beautiful villages in Portugal all made with local dark stone and slate.

After lunch on Piadao, we headed up the mountains to visit the highest point in Portugal - the Serra da  Estrela at an elevation of 6,500 ft.  Interesting mountain top with two big radar/observatory looking buildings and 360 degree views of the country around us.

We finally arrived at the Pousada Serra da Estrela, our stay for the night.  A very large building that used to be a Sanatorium/Spa high up in the mountains overlooking the valleys below. It reminded me of the movie the Shinning but in a nice way.  Big rooms, big halls, indoor swimming pool in the basement, old world charm.

Tomorrow, we head to Porto, the wine country of Portugal.
